Steve Coogan, Tom Burke and Hayley Squires have boarded Netflix’s upcoming heist series Legends.
From the creator of BBC One’s The Gold, Legends is inspired by one of the most remarkable criminal investigations ever conducted, following a group of British Customs employees sent undercover to infiltrate some of the country’s most dangerous criminal drug gangs.
Burke, Coogan and Squires are joined by Aml Ameen (A Man in Full, Rustin), Jasmine Blackborow (The Gentlemen, Marie Antoinette), Douglas Hodge (G20, Joker), Tom Hughes (The English, Victoria), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow, Great Expectations) , Gerald Kyd (The Assassin, Love Rat) and Charlotte Ritchie (YOU, Ghosts).
Show is set in the early 1990s, when Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise was losing its battle with illegal drug smuggling across Britain’s borders. In a top-secret operation, a small team of customs employees were sent undercover. Their task was to infiltrate Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs.
Legends comes from Neil Forsyth, who created The Gold for the BBC about a different heist, which starred Dominic Cooper and Jack Lowden and was picked up by Paramount+. The production team is also similar, with Forsyth and Ben Farrell producing for All3Media-backed Tannadice and Richard Bradley doing the same for All3 stablemate Lion Television. Directors of Legends are Brady Hood and Julian Holmes. Series producer is Charlie Leech.
Legends was unveiled by Netflix at last year’s Edinburgh TV Festival. The Netflix UK team is having quite the moment this week with Adolescence, which has attracted rave reviews and is sitting atop the most-watched.
