Night ferry service resumes between Jorhat & Majuli after 6-month halt – ET TravelWorld

Night ferry service connecting Jorhat and Majuli districts across the Brahmaputra River resumed operations on Thursday evening after a six-month hiatus. Operated by the vessel “MV Jahnavi“, this service marks a crucial step in improving connectivity between the mainland and the world’s largest river island.

The ferry, which covers a distance of 9 km between Neamati Ghat in Jorhat and Aphalamukh Ghat in Majuli, will follow a fixed schedule with departures from Jorhat at 5 pm and return trips from Majuli at 7 pm daily. This resumption is particularly significant as water transport remains the only viable mode of connection between these two districts.

“The night ferry service will be especially beneficial for patients requiring medical attention, office-goers, and tourists visiting the cultural hub of Majuli. This service addresses a long-standing need for reliable evening transportation between the two districts,” an Inland Water Transport (IWT) official said.

The IWT department has implemented a comprehensive fare structure to accommodate various transportation needs. Passengers can purchase tickets through both online and offline channels, with rates set at Rs 20 per traveler. Two-wheeler transport costs Rs 60, while Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) and Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) are charged Rs 900 and Rs 1900 respectively.

Pranab Gogoi, a Jorhat resident, expressed his relief at the service’s resumption. “For months, we had to plan our travel very carefully to return before dark. This night ferry service gives us more flexibility in managing our daily schedules, especially for those who work in Majuli. The service will also provide a crucial lifeline for patients requiring urgent medical attention in Jorhat’s better-equipped facilities,” he said.

The IWT department has assured that all necessary safety measures are in place for night operations, including proper lighting systems and trained crew members.
