Chaudhary Charan Singh International (CCSI) Airport will halt all flight operations between 10 am and 6 pm starting March 1 due to a major recarpeting project scheduled to last until July 15. Officials predict the refurbishment will impact more than 1,088 flights over the 136-day period. This extensive work is expected to disrupt the travel plans of around 1.84 lakh passengers who have made advance bookings, a TOI report stated.
The 2,744-metre-long and 45-metre-wide bituminous runway, which also features an additional 7.5-metre shoulder on either side, was last recarpeted in 2018. This time, the airport plans to carry out milling of the existing runway, followed by an inlay and overlay process to meet new design parameters and regulatory standards. A total area of 1.80 lakh square metres, including the runway and taxiways, will be recarpeted. To improve operations further, the airport will also construct a new full-length parallel taxiway of 2,744 metres. This new taxiway will help ensure quicker aircraft entry and exit after landing or takeoff. Additionally, an extra taxiway (P9) will be constructed.
In addition to the recarpeting work, the airport is also upgrading its airfield ground lighting system, switching from halogen to energy-efficient LED lights. This conversion is expected to achieve a minimum 50% reduction in power consumption. Alongside this, airfield signage will also be updated to meet the latest standards.

The runway upgradation project has been carefully planned, with consultations involving various stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and airlines. This collaborative effort has allowed the airport to secure necessary approvals while minimizing flight cancellations and disruptions.

As the recarpeting project progresses, passengers are urged to stay informed and adjust their travel plans accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
