Adding more fuel-efficient fleet will make it easier for airlines to achieve net-zero goals – ET TravelWorld

Jaideep Mirchandani, Chairman of Sky One, has underscored the critical role that fuel-efficient aircraft will play in helping India achieve its long-term net-zero emission goals. He expressed confidence that India can continue to lead in the global aviation sector by adopting more sustainable practices, with the addition of modern, fuel-efficient planes to airline fleets.

Mirchandani highlighted the strategic importance of aircraft such as the Boeing 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner in this transition. These aircraft, he noted, are designed to deliver significant improvements in fuel efficiency and environmental performance. “Adding more fuel-efficient aircraft, such as the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner, aligns with India’s strategic plans to achieve net-zero emissions in the long run. Modern aircraft consume less fuel, produce fewer emissions, and operate more quietly than their predecessors,” he said.

The 737 MAX, for example, is expected to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions per seat by 14 per cent, while the 787 Dreamliner can contribute to a 20-25 per cent reduction in fuel use and emissions due to its advanced materials and engines.

Boeing has already highlighted India as a key market, with plans to deliver two aircraft per month to Indian airlines through 2024-2025. This includes a range of models, such as the 737, 737 MAX, 757, 777, and 787 Dreamliner. Similarly, Airbus has received significant orders, including a massive 350-aircraft order from Air India, which includes 40 A350s and 210 A320 Family aircraft.

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, India’s air passenger traffic has surpassed 350 million annually, making it the third-largest aviation market globally. Mirchandani praised the Ministry’s steps toward sustainability, including efforts to promote green energy at airports and mandate carbon emissions mapping. “These efforts are essential for a sustainable future in civil aviation,” he concluded.
