Malaysia has achieved its target of welcoming 1,009,114 Indian tourists between January and November 2024, marking a significant 47 per cent growth compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. This increase also represents a remarkable 71.7 per cent rise compared to 2023, further cementing Malaysia’s appeal as a top destination for Indian travellers.
Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Malaysia, highlighted the role of the free visa entry policy introduced in December 2023 in driving this growth. He stated, “The introduction of free visa entry in December 2023 has proven to be a transformative initiative, driving a significant increase in the number of Indian tourists visiting Malaysia.” This policy, along with the launch of new direct flights by Indigo Airlines to Penang and Langkawi, has further strengthened Malaysia’s position as a destination of choice, especially in anticipation of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Tourism Malaysia’s collaboration with tour operators and online travel agencies (OTAs) has been pivotal in promoting Malaysia’s rich culture and attractions. Joint marketing campaigns and extensive digital advertising have helped generate enthusiasm among Indian travellers.
In addition to leisure tourism, Malaysia’s recognition as the Best MICE Destination 2024 has made it an attractive location for business tourism. The seamless integration of business and leisure tourism has boosted the local economy and strengthened Malaysia’s status as a premier destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions.Looking ahead to 2025 and Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Malaysia plans to enhance connectivity and develop tailored tourism products to continue delivering memorable experiences for Indian visitors.
