EXCLUSIVE: Julie Delpy is joining 2x Cannes Film Festival winner star Ruben Östlund’s next movie, The Entertainment System Is Down.
The Before Sunrise actress joins an ensemble cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Keanu Reeves, Nicholas Braun, Tobias Menzies, Connor Swindells, Daniel Webber, Wayne Blair, Dan Wyllie, Lindsay Duncan, Allan Corduner, Sofia Tjelta Sydness, Erin Ainsworth, Myles Kamwendo, Elle Piper, Thibaud Dooms, Sanna Sundqvist, Tea Stjärne, Swedish artist Benjamin Ingrosso and Sanjeev Bhaskar.
Delpy recently wrapped shooting Matt Charman’s limited series The Choice for Netflix, where she leads the series as the French President.
Östlund’s darkly satirical project is set on a long-haul flight between England and Australia where the entertainment system fails and passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored. Two-time Oscar nominee Östlund won the Palme d’Or twice in 2022 for his political comedy Triangle of Sadness as well as 2017 for The Square.
Delpy was first featured in Jean-Luc Godard’s Detective at the age of 14. She has starred in many American and European productions since then, including Roger Avary’s Killing Zoe, Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Three Colors: Blue, White and Red and the Before series, alongside Ethan Hawke: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight directed by Richard Linklater, for which she was nominated for two Academy Awards for her adaptations of Before Sunset and Before Midnight. She also wrote, directed and stars in 2 Days in Paris and 2 Days in New York. Some of her other film credits include Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers, Lasse Hallström’s The Hoax and Joss Wheadon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Delpy has also been nominated for three Cesar Awards. Most recently, she wrote and directed and stars in Meet the Barbarians which premiered at TIFF and will be the opening night film at the Miami Film Festival on April 3.
The Entertainment System is Down is produced by Plattform Produktion (Sweden) with Essential Films (Germany) and Parisienne de Production (France). Co-producers are BBC Film, Film i Väst, Sveriges Television, ARTE France Cinéma, ZDF/ARTE, SF Studios, Eye Eye Pictures (Norway), Paloma Productions (Denmark), Good Chaos (UK). The film is financed by the Swedish Film Institute, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), the Norwegian Film Institute, the Danish Film Institute, with the participation of Canal+, Disney+ and ARTE France and with the support of Creative Europe MEDIA. Produced in association with Proton Cinema, Bord Cadre films, Sovereign Films, Cinema Inutile, Gold Rush Pictures.
World sales are handled by Coproduction Office, and deal with A24 for U.S. distribution rights has previously been announced.
