Following her emotional and Oscar-nominated directorial debut Past Lives starring Greta Lee and Teo Yoo, Celine Song will return to the big screen with a sophomore feature film starring quite the trifecta of big names.
Materialists, also hailing from A24, will feature another love story and triangle of sorts.
Read on for everything we know about Materialists:
When does Materialists come out?
Celine Song’s sophomore film arrives in theaters June 13.
Who is in the cast of Celine Song’s Materialists?
Dakota Johnson will star as matchmaker Lucy. Chris Evans will portray John, who has history with Lucy, and Pedro Pascal will present another option for Lucy’s love life.
What is Celine Song’s Materialists about?
Lucy, an ambitious matchmaker who lives in New York City, is responsible for 9 successful matches so far, according to the film’s trailer. She is torn between the opportunity to be with her perfect match, a unicorn billionaire (Pascal), and her imperfect actor-waitor ex boyfriend played (Evans).
Who else is behind Materialists?
Past Lives producers Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler of Killer Films and 2AM’s David Hinojosa are behind the film, for which Song wrote the script. The team is aiming to start as early as this spring.
Is there a trailer for Materialists?
Yes, a full trailer has been released, set to a rendition of Madonna’s “Material Girl” and followed by a new song from Japanese Breakfast’s latest album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women).
In the clip, one of Lucy’s friends calls her the “eternal bachelorette.” When Pascal’s billionaire first approaches Lucy, he asks if she wants a drink, and her usual order of coke and beer magically appear just as she utters them, procured by her ex-boyfriend and cater-waiter John, whom she hugs fiercely.
Pascal’s rich man’s apartment costs 12 million while Evans’ John still has roommates, but his case for winning Lucy back is compelling.
“When I see your face, I see wrinkles and children that look like you,” he tells her in the trailer. He later asks her why anyone gets married.
“Because they’re lonely, and because they’re hopeful,” she answers.
It looks like this complicated decision might shake Lucy’s foundations and make her question her line of work, 9th Wedding celebration cake and all. An earnest and sad-looking Pedro Pascal versus a blue collar Chris Evans would be a difficult choice indeed.
