Aquaterra Adventures‘ latest report, which delves into the rising trend of solo women travellers in India, highlights the increasing affinity of women aged 45 to 55 for adventure travel. The qualitative study presents compelling findings about the motivations behind women embarking on outdoor journeys, often travelling solo or with female companions to meet like-minded individuals. These women are seeking to explore life on their own terms, unencumbered by family obligations and societal expectations.
The report points out that women in their 50s are particularly drawn to adventure travel as they enjoy higher disposable income and the freedom to travel without the burden of childcare. Many have children who are now adults or independent, giving them the space to pursue personal goals. For these women, adventure travel becomes an act of liberation, allowing them to embrace autonomy, build resilience, and discover their inner strength. Such travel experiences help them challenge their comfort zones, face personal challenges, and gain greater confidence.
Vaibhav Kala, Founder of Aquaterra Adventures, commented on the study’s findings, saying, “Over the last 30 years in adventure travel, 50 per cent of participants are women travellers seeking the outdoors for a sense of liberation. Many are at a stage in life where they feel the need to explore and experience life outside traditional boundaries. Safety is their top priority, as is the desire to travel with like-minded individuals. For many, these trips provide a sense of clarity and confidence, particularly for women seeking to make life-changing decisions.”
As women increasingly turn to adventure travel, destinations like the Dolomites, Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, and the Manaslu Circuit top the list for solo adventurers. Activities such as kayaking and high-adrenaline expeditions on the Tons, Zanskar, Siang, and Subansari rivers continue to grow in popularity. For these travellers, stepping out of their comfort zones is the common thread that unites their journeys.
