The Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) will start operating direct flights to five new cities starting from next month. BPIA authorities announced on Thursday their plans to initiate flights to Indore four days a week and Dehradun three days a week, effective January 1, 2025. IndiGo will operate on these routes. Similarly, Air India Express will initiate flights to Lucknow and Jaipur three days a week and to Kochi every day, starting from January 3, 2025.
According to the schedule, the IndiGo flights to Indore and Dehradun will depart from Bhubaneswar at 3pm. The airport authorities have also indicated plans to start new flights to Bengaluru from January 4. These flights will depart at 6:15am and return at 12:20am.
“Besides expanding air connectivity, the addition of these flights will contribute to the economic development of Bhubaneswar and the state, at large,” BPIA director Prasanna Pradhan said, adding, “We are committed to providing our passengers the best travel experience.”
Earlier in October, Union civil aviation minister K Rammohan Naidu, during his visit to Bhubaneswar, announced that the city airport will undergo a significant expansion with the addition of a new terminal building. “The decision to expand the airport’s infrastructure is a measure aimed at accommodating the growing needs of both domestic and international air travellers in the forthcoming years from the city,” Naidu said during his visit to the state.
Passengers welcomed the govt’s initiative of enhancing the airport’s infrastructure while introducing flights to new destinations. “Bhubaneswar is a growing city. It should be connected with more and more national and international destinations,” Biswas Mahapatra, a frequent flyer, said.
